Mechantiques is the country's largest dealer in mechanical musical instruments. We buy, sell and trade all forms of mechanical musical instruments such as disc or cylinder type music boxes, musical clocks, coin operated pianos (often called nickelodeons or orchestrions), band organs, carousel organs, monkey organs, phonographs with horns, automata, mechanical singing birds, organettes, etc. - anything in antique mechanical music. We also handle other particularly interesting and early mechanical items such as pre-1895 electric fans, pre-1940 slot machines, cast iron vending machines, Wurlitzer jukeboxes from the 1940's, etc. Mechantiques typically buys items outright. We buy one piece or collections, and will take all applicable items in a collection so you don't have to worry about the harder to sell items. As a policy we do not take items on consignment, we only buy outright. We consider consignments to be risky and speculative for the seller, allowing the dealer to overestimate what something is worth just to get items on consignment, and perhaps never pay for items. We feel it is much cleaner and provides considerable peace of mind. Mechantiques does not do restorations, however we will buy items in any condition |

PRICES & PAYMENT: We carry a large stock, and sometimes things hang around longer than we would like or we simply are looking to make some room so we reduce prices - we typically make a notation when a price has been reduced, and these items can represent real bargains, so check for them. Also, we are not insulted by offers! If you see something you really like, but feel the price is a little higher than it should be or a little more than you can justify, make us an offer, we will give you a simple "yes", "no", or "in between"! Can't afford to pay for an expensive item fully up front? We often arrange for payment plans of up to a few months or more on more expensive items, again - just ask, we're really very nice! We maintain a list of specific items wanted by collectors so that we can contact them when that item comes in. We handle a lot of pieces, and often an item will sell directly to a customer on our "wanted" list before it ever appears on a sales list. We urge you to let us know what you are looking for by leaving your wants with us. We are members of the Musical Box Society International, Automatic Musical Instruments Collectors Association and the Musical Box Society of Great Britain. Mechantiques does not buy regular player pianos (e.g. the type you have to pump), just electric grand and coin operated pianos Please note that we do not buy any mechanical musical items made after about 1930, and no music boxes made after about 1910, so if your music box is marked "Japan" or "Reuge" or "Thorens" it would be a waste of your time to contact us about it. ------------------------------------------ Of course we are still buying! Please call us with individual items or collections. ------------------------------------------ In 2006 the Roenigks made the latest addition to their group of properties in Eureka Springs - purchasing a historic 1901 stone church and renaming it the Gavioli Chapel. The Gavioli Chapel is being used for wedding ceremonies, but in addition it houses a small collection of antique mechanical musical instruments, highlighted by a fantastic Gavioli fairground organ from the Tom Fretty museum. These instruments are available to be seen by calling the manager of the Gavioli Chapel at 479-253-0008. This is an effort to provide a fun environment for weddings and to bring antique mechanical musical instruments out in front of the public again. ------------------------------------------ MECHANTIQUES CURRENT
SALES LIST Updated May 4, 2007 ------------------------------------------ The Encyclopedia is Back! We have acquired a limited supply of brand new copies of the Encyclopedia of Automatic Musical Instruments by Q. David Bowers. This 1000 page, heavily illustrated, oversized tome is the "bible" of mechanical music. Only $100 postpaid in the U.S., two for $180, five for $400 while supply lasts.
DISC MUSIC BOXES RD-6 Polyphon 19 5/8" Disc Music Box in Upright Case. A very attractive and unusual 19 5/8" Polyphon in a single piece upright cabinet. Very attractive although the case has some challenges - there is some wood worm damage to the bottom moldings, the top molding on the base section on the left and right sides has been cut off halfway back, and the second (left) coin slides and escutcheon are missing, the upper front door has been modified and needs to have the fretwork and curved molding design it had originally, and the coin drawer is missing. More importantly (all those things can be fixed pretty easily) this is an exceptionally fine sounding Polyphon! It has the bedplate style that, for some reason produced the best of the 19 5/8" Polyphons - very loud, strong and deep. $6,850 as is $7,800 if we get to making some of the cosmetic repairs. Rare Harmonia 16" Disc Mechanism Only. The Harmonia brand disc music box is exceptionally rare, we have never had one that I can remember. This is a projectionless mechanism just like the Stella. We have 12 discs with it. Single comb, three teeth missing. Bedplate is complete with motor, governor, etc - just needs the proper size table model case to mount it in. Serial number 1144. You won't find another. $1,900. Rare Euphonia Brand 20 ¾" Double Comb Disc Music Box With Short Bedplate in Unusual Campaign Style Case. I don't remember having a Euphonia before, and to find any F.G. Otto music boxes in the 20 ¾" size with a short bedplate is very unusual (but, then, see the Criterion we have elsewhere on this list!). The combination of the large size disc and the short bedplate give this rare marquee a wonderful sound. This was most likely made by F.G. Otto since it plays the Criterion and Olympia 20 ¾" discs (we don't have any discs marked "Euphonia"), ten discs come with it. In a lovely "campaign" style case with brass fittings. Mechanism has been restored at some time, not sure if the case has been refinished, it all looks and sounds beautiful and is ready to go. Serial number 15558. Gorgeous Art Nouveau lid picture. $6,500. HP-2 Exceptional Criterion 20 ¾" Disc Music Box With Short Bedplate. This is another F.G. Otto product, very late with the short bedplate that is rarely found in this make. This example is all original, doesn't seem to ever have been touched, and it sounds just fabulous. As good as any Criterion 20 ¾" table model I can remember hearing. With carved front mahogany case with stepped lid and decorative molding. This example was coin-op, with some of that mechanism remaining, but was probably converted back (or even delivered originally) at the factory since the stop start works correctly and stops at the end of the tune. Model 15 according to the celluloid tag. Beautiful tune sheet. Serial number 15595 (note that this serial number is less than 40 apart from the Euphonia we also have for sale - they must have been in the factory very nearly the same time!). $6,500 with ten discs. [SOLD] Symphonion Style 38A Three-Disc Eroica Tall Case Clock. Scarce and exceptionally desirable, these three-disc Eroica clocks are truly wonderful and at or near the top of most disc music box collector’s want list. This one is fully restored and plays great. Comes with twenty sets of discs. $55,000. [SOLD] ST-117 Attractive Olympia 15 ½” Disc Double Comb Music Box. Pretty Olympia with pressed design on front. Has had some light restoration. One tip replaced, lid stay not correct, otherwise very nice and sounds excellent. $3650. ON-106 Rare Stella 26” Disc Upright Music Box. These huge Stella 26” disc models are quite scarce, many collectors are not even aware of their existence. They came in both console and upright styles. This one is in a beautiful upright case with inlay decorations. We are having some restoration work done on this rare and very desirable music box. There are about fifteen teeth that are being replaced, otherwise the music box is all original and is expected to sound great (the photos here are prior to restoration). With 12 discs (more are available, see below). This music box was owned by a Canadian for many years and was donated to the Loretto Abbey in Toronto, Canada in 1968 where it has been until we purchased it. $18,500 mechanically restored. [SOLD] ON-206 Collection of Stella 26” Discs. Rare opportunity for those fortunate enough to have a 26” Stella music box to buy additional musical discs for your machine. We have an extraordinary grouping of 141 extra discs. Will be sold in lots of ten or more. We hope to pick these up in late January and will be able to discuss condition and perhaps titles at that time. $85 per disc, discounts for purchases of more than ten. Note - as of April 15th we are down to 72 discs available to sell. CT-106 Stella 17 ¼” Double Comb Table Model. Very decorative example of this popular make and size disc music box. Double comb with four broken treble teeth on the top comb. Plays well. Case is very attractive with carving on the front, crack in lid. Has lid stay although it doesn’t show in the photos. While the table is not a matching table by any stretch of the imagination, it is very attractive and works very well with this music box. Has four broken teeth. We expect to pick this up in January and will be able to provide a much better description and photos then. $4200 with the table, $3850 without. Exceptionally Rare Mahogany Olympia 27” Disc Upright – Only Example Known. We are excited to be able to offer this apparently unique American music box. This music box first surfaced when it was offered by American International Galleries in their 1977 – 1978 catalog, from the Bernard Kaufman Collection. Imagine, owning an Olympia 27” disc music box, when F. G. Otto’s commercial production was only composed of 20 ¾” or smaller models. This was undoubtedly a trial effort, perhaps for a national Exhibition, designed to compete with the immensely popular Regina 27” disc boxes, perhaps done late in the life of the F. G. Otto company. In fine restored condition (older restoration), with four expertly replaced teeth, and with a number of discs (actually there are 9 original discs plus 13 reproductions from one source and 4 from another source, I believe all from the 9 originals). Plays very well, has quite fine combs, and has a finer sound than a 27” Regina. Very decorative mahogany case with columns, carved fretwork, paneling, and with an inlaid eagle in the rather odd looking pediment. Disc storage area in the bottom, but no dividers. I expect this was made for an exhibition but obviously never got into commercial production. Unknown in Bower’s Encyclopedia. An exceptionally important piece of mechanical music Americana. Truly a museum piece. $27,000 Rare Symphonion 21 ¼” Disc Autochanger With Bells Style 100. One of the rarest, most desirable, and most impressive disc music boxes ever made. The Symphonion autochanger was made in extremely limited quantities. We owned one a number of years ago which went to a museum collection in Japan. We know of perhaps 5 or 6 extant examples. Please se Bower's Encyclopedia page 230. This massive machine is over eight feet tall and in a gorgeous gothic style case. The Symphonion 21¼" mechanism with saucer bells has always been one of our favorites. The mechanism is excruciatingly complex and a delight to ponder. This one arrived as a major "project", literally in boxes, and that is the way it remains! There are some mechanical parts missing, and the case is only partly there (the most important part, the highly decorative door, is there). We can introduce you to someone who would probably trade resources for one they are trying to restore. For sale as is for $18,000. This is a truly rare opportunity. Huge Kalliope 25” Disc Music Box With Twelve Saucer Bells. This is Kalliope’s largest size, with bells. These large Kalliopes with bells are among the very best sounding of all disc music boxes. This came to us in excellent original condition and we have since had it mechanically restored so that it sounds and looks great mechanically (photo in cabinets are before mechanical restoration – see separate photos of restored mechanism). It sounds fabulous as do all of these large Kalliope bell boxes. Coin operated. Has a zither attachment, which seems unusual. Both the zither and the bells have external on/of levers. Case is nice, original motor cover, no base or gallery, glass is replaced with new (poor) gold lettering. Crank escutcheon is broken but all there. Comes with 20 discs but only 5 - 6 of them have titles, the others look like they have been painted or plated but are probably playable. Rare opportunity. $14,250. S-13. Kalliope 23” Disc Upright Music Box. Kalliope 23" upright. No base, Unrestored. Home model, plays beautifully. Missing one foot. Motor is beautifully stored. WIth eight discs. PRICE REDUCED TO 7,850.
S-17. New Century 18 ½” Disc Double Comb. New Century 18½" Double Comb. Nicks on lid. Restored. Mechanism very loud and bright. Some motor noise. Wonderful and scarce marque. Includes fourteen discs (one is new). PRICE REDUCED TO $6,750. S-44. Symphonion 13 5/8” “Musical Automata” Disc Music Box. Symphonion 13 5/8" table model, plain case, table model. Double comb. Top incised design says "Symphonion Musical Automata". Coin-op mechanism removed? (no evidence). Has original on/off switch (which is operating as an instant stop). Extremely clean. Missing lock hasp. $2,450.
S-61. Unusual 19 5/8” Table Model Polyphon In Lovely Carved Oak Case. Polyphon 19 5/8" double comb disc music box in exceptionally ornate carved oak table model case, very fancy bedplate, not in Bowers. The great preponderance of 19 5/8" Polyphons were made in upright coin operated cases, very few are available in these typically ornate table model cases designed for home use. Further, it is highly unusual to find a Polyphon in an oak case, let alone a carved case like this. Lovely. Has had some light restoration, lid stay replaced. Sounds great. Ready to be a standout in the finest collection. With ten discs (one is new) $7,200.
Olympia 9” Single Comb Disc Music Box. Plain case, two broken teeth. Runs slowly, 9 discs, unusual separate drawer for discs that music box sits on, oak – should be refinished. Lid stay incomplete, lid closure hardware missing. $1100. PRICE REDUCED! ASH-4 Mahogany Stella Grand 15 ½” Disc Music Box, Single Comb. Mahogany cabinet, has base cabinet which is a nice fit but is not a disc cabinet. Two broken teeth. One comb screw missing. Plays very nice. With ten discs. Excellent original condition. PRICE REDUCED TO $2,150. OZ-29 Case for Coin Operated Regina 15 ½” Disc Music Box. Empty case for Regina 15 ½” music box, rope molding design, with lid picture, interior boards, winding cone, and coin slide. $350
OZ-36 Regina 27” Disc Automatic Changer, Mahogany, Fully Restored. Mahogany case Style 34 (see Bowers Encyclopedia page 203 upper left). Later, more reliable lever type mechanism. This lovely Regina automatic changer, in their largest size, is currently undergoing a full restoration, mechanical and cosmetic. It should be available around March of 2007. $23,500. OZ-45 Kalliope 13 3/8" Disc Music Box with Ten Bells. Kalliope 13 3/8" disc music box with Ten Bells, center drive. Single comb. Lovely fully restored example of this lovely style of music box. The bells add a lot of enchantment to the music and it plays just great after its restoration (three teeth were replaced, otherwise a pretty standard restoration). With twelve discs. $3450 OZ-60 Scarce Regina 15 ½” Automatic
Changer In “Commercial Style” Case, Needs Repair. Regina 15 ½”
automatic changer, mahogany, flat front, metal legs, serial number
3500008. This is the scarce “Commercial Style” case with flat front and
cast iron legs, see Bowers Encyclopedia, page 194, lower far left,,
“Corona 36 Flat”. Incomplete mechanism with some rust on combs and three
broken teeth, missing dampers. Missing lifting levers, tracks for disc
rack, original disc rollers and brackets, coin mechanism and coin slide,
tune selector knob, lithograph. Has piano back. Some inappropriate
mechanical repair work has been done to it. Case is in generally good
condition, except for some chipping on upper corners, needs refinishing.
This item must be inspected prior to purchase since I don’t want to
misrepresent what is or isn’t there. Quite a bargain for the
mechanically inclined! $9650. Mira 18 ½” Disc Music Box In Carved Mahogany Console Case. All original example of the largest of these exceptionally fine double comb disc music boxes. This one has been beautifully restored mechanically and sounds great. The case is in very nice condition (other than missing half of the dividers in the disc storage area) with a finish that will be good after cleaning and polishing – however there are two large worn or abrazed areas on the top that will require refinishing the top. Case is missing a 2” piece of molding under the lid. This is the model with the heavy carving in front, and columns on the corners, very attractive. With twelve discs, $9500. ------------------------------------------
DISCS! DISCS! DISCS! We make no attempts to sell discs other than
when someone buys a music box and wants extra discs. As a result we
typically have over 1,000 discs in stock of various makes and sizes.
Heavy concentration in Regina, Polyphon, Stella, Mira. If you want to
buy in quantities of ten or more with no list, email or call us and
we’ll send you a price list. Otherwise, please stop by and you can go
through them. We also discounts for very large quantity purchase. Updated May 4, 2007 | ||||
