SALES LIST
RD-1 Paillard 16 ¼” “Sublimette Piccolo Zither” Cylinder Music Box.
Twelve tune with tune sheet. Very bright. Fully restored. Called a
“Sublimette Piccolo Zither” which I have never seen before, sort of
an Octavo box with very unusual harmonic effect. Lovely floral
inlay, fine restored case. Double springs. Sublime harmony. Has a
lovely Paillard tag. $2,950. [HOLD]
RD-2 Six-Cylinder Early “Rechange” Music Box With Matching Table. This is a really delightful music box. It has six 10 7/8” cylinders and is quite early for an interchangeable, having a lovely brass bedplate and is probably a “rechange” meaning the cylinders can only be used in this music box and are not truly interchangeable with other examples by the same maker. Very interesting program with full tune sheet for all cylinders, mostly opera including two cylinders with multiple selections from the same opera. Nicely cleaned case with mother of pearl diamond inlays. Bright and very lively arrangements with trills. Matching table. Brass handles. Fully restored. Serial number 14186. $6,800. [HOLD]
RD-3 Mermod Freres 14 ¾" Cylinder Music Box. Ten tunes, no tune sheet. Beautuful inlay with drum, flute. Brass handles. Older restoration. Typical bright loud Mermod sound - very nice. Crank not original $1,850. [HOLD]
RD-4 Twelve Tune Music Box With 13" Cylinder. Originally a faux grain finish, this box has been refinished to a fruitwood finish. Very loud and bright. Perhaps a Cuendet?. Serial number 13707. Restored. Mandolin inlay on top. Nickel plated cylinder. $1,500.
RD-5 Mermod Freres Ideal Soprano 14 ¾" with Four Cylinders in
Carved Case. A truly wonderful example of this very popular size
and format from Mermod Freres. Restored mechanism in a lovely carved
front mahogany case. Sounds great with wonderful arrangements. One
of those "no excuses" music boxes - wonderful throughout. Even has
beautiful celluloid tags. Some scratches on the lid (oops - there's
the one excuse!). Loud and bright, original finish. A bargain at
$5,800. [HOLD]
RD-7 Sublime Harmonie Tremelo ¾" Cylinder
Music Box. Lovely
restored eight tune music box, probably by Paillard.
Reproduction tune sheet. Beautiful case, inlaid front and top
with musical instruments, gorgeous finish and condition.
Mechanically fully restored as well. Sounds Wonderful.
Loud strong tone. $2,650.
SAT-1 Paillard Full Orchestral Music Box With Six Cylinders and Matching Table.
Fabulous example of this complicated (and originally extremely expensive) style of cylinder music box. Full complement of "instruments" including a 24-note organ, six chased (hand engraved) bells, drum and wood block. Two spring barrels. Matching table. This music box has been fully restored both mechanically and cosmetically. I am including photos of the mechanism after restoration just to give you an idea of the extreme complexity (think of making this back in the 1880's!) of the mechanism, and the extraordinary effort that has gone into the very expensive and complete mechanical restoration including recovering the bellows. This is a great sounding example, very strong, will be a highlight of any advanced music box collection. Varied selection of tunes. Small brass and mother of pearl inlay on top and front with Carpathian burled elm veneer (faux finish on drawer fronts). Double spring barrels. With six 14 =" cylinders there is a wonderfully varied program. This music box has everything! $19,250.

HP-1 Possibly Unique Mermod Freres 20” Interchangeable Coin-Operated
With Dolls and Butterfly!.
This is an exceptionally rare, if not unique piece. It is a standard
Mermod Freres 20” fat cylinder interchangeable with three cylinders,
the second largest size Mermod made. However it is coin
operated and has three dancing dolls and a butterfly. I have never
seen this size Mermod with dolls, I have never seen this size Mermod
coin-operated, and I have never seen a mechanical butterfly on any
cylinder music box! This mechanism is installed in a nice but
non-original case with some inlay. I am sure that originally it had
a glass front and/or glass topped case for coin operation in a
public location. Very good original condition needing a standard
mechanical restoration and one broken tooth repaired, and the dolls
and butterfly require some mechanical restoration. If this is here
very long we will probably arrange to have a proper display cabinet
made for it. What a spectacular and possibly unique opportunity! You
can buy it as is for $14,000.
[SOLD] AL-06 Wonderful Large
“Eagle & Flag” Troll & Baker Sublime Harmonie Piccolo Interchangeable
Cylinder Music Box With Matching Table. Fabulous piece of furniture,
and an even more impressive music box! Five large 17 ¼” by 2 ¾”
cylinders, with fine six-tune pinning. Sublime Harmonie Piccolo. Double
spring for long play, mirror on inside of lid, original tune sheet (some
damage). Really lovely brass and pearl inlay in the exquisite marquetry
designs, lovely burl veneers, case and table in excellent condition.
Lovely sound with great trills in the complicated arrangements. Includes
original tune sheet: 1st Cylinder: Nanon; Stephanie; Nell Gqynne; Barber
of Seville; Martha; Lohengrin. 2nd Cylinder: Sweet By & By; Nearer My
God to Thee; Abide with Me; Maiden’s Prayer; Annie Laurie; Home Sweet
Home. 3rd Cylinder: Star Spangled Banner; Marsellaise; God Save the
Queen; Peek a Boo; Mocking Bird; Auld Lang Syne. 4th Cylinder: Swedish
Wedding March; When the Swallows Homewards; Tending on the Old Camp
Ground; Home Again Darling Nelly Gray; Dixie’s Land. 5th Cylinder:
Sylvia; Tompette of the Regiment; Lob der Frauen; Dancing in the Barn;
Pardon de Foermel; Quisisel. This unusual music box has an eagle and
American flag on shield engraved on the elaborate tune indicator – was
this a custom box for a special customer? Perhaps a northern General
with the “Star Spangled Banner”? Or a Southern General with “Dixie
Land”? We will never know but it is fun to imagine! Music box 43” wide,
10” high, 17” deep; table 52” wide, 26 ½” high, 25 ¼” deep. 36” high,
52” wide, 25 ½” deep. . Has had some light restoration and adjustment
and is in really exceptional all original condition. $17,250. [SOLD] FL-086 Large "Concerto Piccolo Harp" Eight Cylinder Music Box with Seven Bells and Matching Table. Beautiful interchangeable cylinder music box. Unusual with bells only as accompaniment, typically much nicer sounding as bells are the most musical of the potential accompanying instruments. With eight 6-tune cylinders, 14" length. Box is 36" wide, 15" deep, 12" high, table is 47" wide, 25" deep, 32" high. Recent light mechanical restoration including expert replacement of 3 - 4 teeth. Plays great! Wonderful selections and some really neat arrangements. Lovely combination of case and matching table. Unusual to have so many cylinders with a music box. Came from a house in Florida. $14,250. [HOLD] Oak Carved Mermod Freres with Four 20” Cylinders and Matching Table. This is the second largest size Mermod, and I believe it is scarcer than the 24 ½”, at least that has been our personal experience over the past 35 years. Fat cylinders, six tunes each, fine comb. This one is playing great. Has had a recent cleaning and polishing of the mechanism – I don’t think it had ever been touched up to that point, which is exactly how we love to find them but rarely do nowadays. The combs are perfect. All original, complete with original tune cards and album to hold them. Beautiful carved oak case and matching table have their original finishes, missing lid support. A rare and wonderful opportunity. $28,000.
Unusual Mandolin Basse Piccolo Interchangeable Cylinder Music Box in
Carved Oak Case with Matching Table. Beautiful music box with four
13" X 2½" cylinders with six tunes each, matching
table. mandolin Piccolo format. Sounds very nice, will be a
wonderful music box when restored. Neat arrangements including
lovely trills, program includes a selection from The Creation by Haydn
Dark burl veneers with ebony edges and banding inlay plus a decorative
inlay on top. Huge brass handles. Fine original condition.
(four tips broken). complete with damaged original tune sheet.
Inner glass is missing. $8,800. Rare “L’Universal” Unusual Format Interchangeable with Bells and with 17 Cylinders. These are the neatest technological developments in the entire music box field. Apparently made in extremely limited numbers, this is only the second we have ever had. See Bower’s Encyclopedia, page 63, top, for photo and description. I believe these came with and without bells, this one has three bells. Includes seventeen single tune cylinders. Large ship’s wheel for winding, decorative carved or pressed design over entire lid. Very nice restored condition. Much scarcer than the ever popular Capital Cuff Box type. With all seventeen cylinders – PRICE REDUCED TO $3600
F-1. Paillard 13" Cylinder Mandolin Music Box. Paillard 13" cylinder music box, six tune, fully restored. Very pretty arrangements, really outstanding delicate sound, new tune sheet. Not in its original case although it is an original period cylinder music box case and it would be very difficult to detect. Case is 26" wide, 7" high, 8 =" deep. A wonderful music box. $2,100. S-46B. 13” Cylinder Music Box. Early controls, plain case, bright sound with some damper squeaks. $1400. MI-4. Ducommon-Girod Piano-Forte Keywind 13” Cylinder Music Box. Lovely restored Ducommon-Girod with 13” cylinder, early keywind music box, six tunes (three by Verdi, one by Donizetti, two by Lubitzhy), piano-forte style. Serial number 34021. Beautiful bright sound. Plain early case has some damage to it. $3200.
K-27 17 1/8” Cylinder Music Box with Six Bells. Twelve tune, coarse comb. With six bells. One replaced tooth. Pretty, large floral inlay on top. Damper squeaks, but will sound very nice. $2,800. MA-1 Mermod Freres 13 3/8” Cylinder, Veneer Damage. Late style Mermod Freres cylinder box with 13 3/8” cylinder, eight tunes, tune indicator. One broken tooth, some comb discoloration, problem with governor and/or spring and/or safety check, it skips and needs to be repaired before playing. Late example with outside crank wind. Lid veneer and inlay is damaged, with perhaps one-third to one-half of inlay missing, and there is a crack in the lid. Case has large brass handles. If you are good at case restoration, this will be a bargain as this size Mermod sounds very nice when restored. Only $1,250.
AZ-1 Mojon Manger & Co 14” Cylinder Soprano. Nice, large, fine condition cylinder box. Has been cleaned and polished but not adjusted – looks great but needs some damper work and some tuning and/or registering. Bright lively tone and arrangements. Inlay of drum and trumpets on lid, small decal on front. Case 27” wide, 7 ¼” high, 10 ½” deep. Cylinder 14” X 2 ½”. Combs are excellent, no repairs. Two springs. “MMC”, for Mojon, Manger & Co., on the governor. One flat foot at left rear missing off case. $2100. Miniature 6-Cylinder Music Box. Here’s an unusual item which I have seen in other makes/formats but not this exact make/design. Little 2 ¼” single tune cylinders. Works but needs some attention. There is no manufacturer’s name on it that I can find. Case looks old but probably not original to this mechanism. $350. ASH-11 Charles Paillard Cylinder Music Box With Very Long 22” Cylinder. Marked “CP&C” which I believe means Charles Paillard & Cie, a fine maker of music boxes and rarely encountered (although surprisingly enough we have two of them on this list). Appears to be Sublime Harmonnie Guitar or Tremolo. Unfortunately this has six broken teeth and twelve broken tips on the right cob and nine broken teeth, six broken ends, and three broken tips on the left comb. The combs originally had about 77 teeth each and this was a very nice eight tune music box. Lovely inlaid case. Double zithers. Plays very sluggishly, needs lubrication (in addition to everything else!). Very unusual to have a cylinder this long. PRICE REDUCED TO $2,100. ASH-14 Ten Tune Large Cylinder Music Box With Six Bells. 13” cylinder, six bells (three of the bells are not original), one broken tooth. Ten tune. Missing glass internal cover. Other wise okay original condition. $1,200.
ASH-19 Eight Tune Music Box with 11” Cylinder. Very good original condition. Original tune sheet has edge torn off. Double spring. Very pretty, no broken teeth, tune changer mechanism, plays very well. Zither. $1,400. ASH-20 Music Box with 11” Cylinder. Older restoration. Zither. Loud, plays well, damper squeaks. No tune sheet. $1400 OZ-27 Mermod Freres Music Box with One 11” Interchangeable Cylinder. Marked “Jacot”. Cylinder music box, 11” interchangeable cylinder type with only one cylinder, double spring barrel. Six tune. Plays and sounds very nice, needs damper work. Comb is fine, tip is off the far right tooth. Attractive case. $2700.
OZ-73 Box Lot of Four Interchangeable Music Box Cylinders. Box of four
interchangeable cylinders for cylinder boxes. I believe these are all
Ideal Mermod cylinders, all around 11”, appear to be two in Guitar
format, 1 Piccolo, don’t know on the fourth. $1000 for the lot.
Thibouville Lamy Ten Tune Music Box. J. Thibouville Lamy. Ten tune with tune card. One broken tooth. 10 ¾” cylinder. No glass. Large black mar on lid. 21”W X 9”D X 6 ½”H. $1,150.
Zither Harmonique Piccolo Cylinder Music Box. Zither Harmonique Piccolo. Six tune, 13” cylinder. Tune card. Three broken teeth, zither loose. Looks rough, needs full restoration, but has lots of potential. 22 ½”W X 9 ¼”D X 5 ½”H. $1,350.
WE-1 Six Tune Keywind Cylinder Music Box. Six tune keywind with 13” cylinder. Nice looking keywind with a nice long cylinder, however the end flap is missing, the governor needs work, and it may need repinning. Comb is very nice. $1050.
Table and Cylinders Only For Interchangeable Cylinder Music Box. How depressing, we have this lovely original table, with two drawers, for an interchangeable cylinder music box, along with five very nice 13” eight-air mandolin cylinders, and the original tune sheet for these and several additional cylinders. Table is 38” wide, 27 ½” deep, has a beautiful inlay on the top of the table, the music box itself would have been set back on the table, the outline for the original music box is 29” wide by 10 ½” deep. But no music box. If you have the right music box, this lucky find will more than double its value. PRICE REDUCED TO $2450 Seven Huge Cylinders, No Music Box. What a great music box these cylinders must go to! There are seven, they measure 19 ½” by about 3 ¼”. There are approximately 172-173 engraved dividing lines, six tunes per cylinder. Cylinders are brass. Each has the serial number “1934” stamped on the end. $2,000 Musical Album on Easel Stand. Faded felt, fair to good condition overall, picture at top with a little damage. Not playing. Unusual with stand. $250. ------------------------------------------ Updated May 4, 2007 Tin Musical Clock. Small musical clock, not working, musical mechanism is rusty. $75.
