The Edinburgh Encyclopedia …The First American Edition. Sir David Brewster (Editor).
Eighteen Volumes Plus Two Volumes of Plates. An extraordinary
resource about the status of the sciences in 1832, accompanied
by two full volumes of amazing plates (which are often seen
sliced and selling for high prices individually). Joseph and
Edward Parker, Philadelphia, 1832. Twenty volume set in calf.
Approximately 10 ¼” X 8”. Covers/bindings fair to good and could
certainly use (and be well worth) rebinding. Some pages with
light to moderate foxing but contents generally in good to very
good condition. The two plate volumes have approximately 545
plates, some illustrations double-page or fold-out including
maps. Range of topics is extensive including geography,
agriculture, industry and engineering, botany, science, etc. Sir
David Brewster, incidentally, invented the kaleidoscope and
there is an interesting section on that invention – these books
represent an almost endless source of fascinating reading and
viewing. $2,200. |

DR-28 (168) Collection of Eight
Original Currier & Ives “Darktown Fire Brigade” Lithographs.
These don’t exactly qualify as “mechanical antiques” however we
purchased them from a retired fireman who collected them in the
1970’s because we thought they were interesting and unusual. It
would be difficult to put this many different Darktown Fire
Brigade lithographs together. I’m told there are thirteen in the
complete Currier and Ives set (they were also made later by
Joseph Koehler), this is a pretty good start on a complete set,
including: Taking A Rest; The Last Shake; The Darktown Hook And
Ladder Corps In Action; The Chief On Duty; To The Rescue;
Saved!; A Prize Squirt (has a brown discoloration streak about
one-half way to the right); Going to The Front. Copyrighted in
the 1884 – 1885 period. Very colorful - may be a great bargain
at $3800 for this set of eight.
- PRICE REDUCED to $3,800. |

(171) SCALES! SCALES ! SCALES! A Major Hoard of Austrian and German Scales. When we purchased the Albert Copeland hoard of Vienna Wall Clocks, we also purchased a hoard of two-pan style Austrian food scales. Made of cast or wrought iron, these are heavy and decorative. Some have pans with them, some do not. They range in size roughly from 8½” tall by 16” wide to 11 ½” tall by 22 ½” wide. There are no weights. We have about 2500 of these, virtually all still wrapped from when they were imported from Austria many years ago. We would like to sell these in quantities to dealers or collectors who want to resell to support their collections. We have them priced at $35 each (without pans), or two for $30 each, or five or more at $25 each, ten or more $20 each. If you want more than ten – talk to us! Pans are $10 per pair with scale purchases, while they last – we don’t seem to have nearly as many pans as we have scales. AND, if you want to be in the scale business, buy all of the approximately 2500 scales for only $25,000! | |
(167) Important Art Deco Art Glass Windows.
Set of three large high Art Deco windows from a bank building in New
Mexico. These are fabulous “high” Art Deco design, obviously custom
made for this bank, believed to be from the 1920’s or 1930’s. Fine
condition. One window (photos) has been reframed in a very expensive art
deco frame, the other two are as they came out of the building (you can
have the other two reframed, it cost us about $3000 for the custom frame
for the first window, done by a metal sculptor here in Eureka Springs).
Window is 36” wide, 62” high, frame is 40” wide, 66 ¼” high, 2” deep.
The photos do not do justice to the window because of the lack of
lighting behind it when the photos were taken. Truly an extraordinary
set. $9,000 for the set of three. Price Reduced
to $9,000.

(165) Original Carousel Chariot, Heavily Carved. We purchased this carousel
chariot back in the 1980’s from Norton in Michigan, for our own
collection, because the theme was so delightful and the carving so
great. We felt that chariots represented the most “displayable” of
carousel carvings because they can be disassembled and the carved side
can be hung on a wall. I don’t recall the maker of the chariot, we once
knew, but it is one of the top five carousel carving companies. $4500
